Kala Voyage Collection – Resilient (N’ / Gardenia)
For 2024, Kala continues The Voyage Collection with two new original works from Mori cultural artist Sam Mangakahia. Each design carries a unique story of strength and beauty, expressed through artwork that contrasts against the warm mahogany body of the ukulele.
The Resilient (Gardenia) model takes inspiration from the N’ (Gardenia brighamii)—an endemic and endangered Hawaiian plant, with fewer than ten left in the wild. This remarkable flower has long provided valuable resources: blossoms for leis, stems for kapa cloth, and fruits for natural dyes. Its ability to endure through the centuries, despite its fragile status, makes it a powerful symbol of resilience.
Sam’s artwork embodies this story of persistence, serving as a reminder to never give up on our passions despite life’s challenges. With its soft ivory design set against a satin mahogany canvas, this ukulele resonates with both cultural meaning and musical expression.
Each Voyage Collection ukulele includes a special edition gig bag and a story card hang tag, sharing the message behind the artwork.
