This work was composed in great haste during the evening of 24th August 1959 to celebrate the 76th birthday of AndrÚ Mangeot the very next day - when I played from a short score to him at his Kensington home! He promptly bowed the full score and conducted the work's first performance the following spring at a concert given by the Oxted Music Society. (John Jeffreys).
