All drums are handmade and are imported directly from the Elikem Youth and Cultural Group who are a non-governmental organisation based in Bodumase, Ghana. The Elikem group uses its profits in Ghana to work with underprivileged children to help provide education welfare and support for the children in the village.
Not only are Elikem drums an ethical choice but they are proper African musical instruments made to specific playing standards. The wooden shell of the drums are made of a whole piece of Tweenoboa wood sourced from managed forests and are lathe turned to a uniform thickness to give a defined resonating chamber (belly) which helps to project the bass sound of the drum. Because the drum's body is made of one piece of wood you will get an authentic sound with warm and sustained tones from the drum. The drum's symmetry, proportions, uniform thickness, and circular playing head are all important details that gives each Elikem Drum it's superior sound quality. The Djembes are made by master craftsmen and are designed to give you optimal musical playing performance. The playing surface is made of tough African goat hide and come pre-tuned in the U.K (climate adjustment tuning) so that each drum reaches you ready to be played with well-defined slap and side tones. The rope work is traditional for West African Djembes and can be tuned easily if required.
